‘‘

I want to give back to the country that saved my life. There are many good people in Austin and at Austin Community College who have helped me learn English and find my passion in life. Now I want to counsel others who have suffered.”

About Qusay

Qusay Hussein is an education advocate, student and motivational speaker. In 2006, he was the victim of a suicide bombing in Mosul, Iraq, from which he suffered multiple injuries and lost his sight. After 62 reconstructive surgeries, Qusay was able to overcome this traumatic experience and use it to advocate on behalf of marginalized communities and individuals with disabilities. In 2010, he traveled to Jordan to seek medical treatment. While recovering, he had the opportunity to serve as a patient/counselor for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), organizing recreational activities for patients recovering from war-related injuries.

In 2012, Qusay immigrated to the United States and integrated himself into American society by quickly learning English. After securing the second-highest GED score in his region, he went on to earn an associate degree from Austin Community College in 2018. He was invited to be the student keynote speaker at his commencement ceremony. During the ceremony, he also received the Austin Community College Presidential Student Achievement award.

With his eye on a graduate degree, Qusay then enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin and in 2021 graduated with a dual bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work. In 2022, he earned his master’s degree from the University of Texas’ Steve Hicks School of Social Work in Austin. Growing up, Qusay dreamed of becoming a surgeon. Although his visual impairment prevents him from operating, he hasn’t given up on being a doctor. His goal is to earn a doctorate degree in psychology.

Qusay currently serves on the association committee for Doctors Without Borders, the advisory committee for Refugee Services of Texas and the student advisory committee for students with disabilities at the University of Texas. He is also the co-chair of the community advisory council for the Texas Center for Disability Studies. Additionally, he has served on the board for the Austin chapter of the National Federation of the Blind (2015–19) and the board of the Texas Association of Blind Students (2016–18). Qusay has also served as vice president at large for the Alpha Gamma Pi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (2017–18).

In his free time, Qusay mentors students at Austin Community College and serves as an interpreter at a local refugee resettlement agency for newly arrived refugees. He also likes to run!
